Students spend approximately 2-3 months analyzing historical data using a variety of analysis methods. The results can provide in-depth insights into the history of your business, its growth, and its future with forecasting exercises. Project requires access to historical data that is already organized (e.g. excel) and ready to use; the different variables are consistently observed over time for at least 60 consecutive time periods (e.g. 60 months or about 5 years; 60 weeks).

Expected outcomes and deliverables

The students will clearly identify the challenges/research question the organization is facing, uncover the root cause of the identified challenges, propose viable solution(s), and recommend the best course of action using appropriate metrics and data analysis.

More specifically, the students will:

  1. Complete the data analysis;
  2. Write a report summarizing their analysis and findings;
  3. Present their findings in front of the class.

All proprietary company information will remain confidential at all times.

Project examples

Projects can include, but are not limited to:

  • Understanding buyers and buying habits over time,
  • Understanding profitability, retention, referrals, and attrition rates for your customers over time,
  • Optimizing product design based on data results,
  • Determining which internal investments make the most sense over time,
  • Developing predictive sales model, etc.

Past projects:

  • Estimating profit functions for Canadian Residential Real Estate Investment Trusts;
  • Investigating the relationship between Exchange Rates and Canadian stock prices;
  • Developing and testing asset pricing models;
  • Analyzing historical sales data and developing a model to forecast future sales and profits;
  • Analyzing sales reorder in order to optimize inventory.
